2016 was an incredible year for web design. In an industry that shifts almost each and every day, innovation is sure to be rapid and competitive. This holds true even for the web design Singapore scene. The web design industry moves at breakneck pace, and for good reason. Modern websites represent the gatekeepers of their modern companies; a first point of contact thousands, and even millions of people will have with your brand. Looking ahead to 2017, here are 5 web design trends that will dominate in 2017.

1. A renewed focus on content

For the past few years, it seems as though the design world has become so complex. It’s almost a distraction to the core messaging of a brand. To a certain extent, this was always going to happen with the increasing complexity of the Internet, but this year, we can expect a return to form of sorts from web designers. Consumers are buying from companies who provide value up front, not who has the slickest animations. This shift will bring with it a golden age in web-based value propositions, starting with 2017.

2. Bold, iconic font styles

Big ideas need big words to support them, and with no shortage of innovative businesses, causes and collectives cropping up in all corners of the globe, bold fonts and text-centric messages are surely going to dominate the homepages of 2017’s bleeding edge. This style will be defined by clean, striking lines and geometric shapes, calling back to many different styles of the past while looking bravely towards the future. The web design scene in Singapore will surely be affected by this to an extent.

3. More colors, and more color

One needs to look no further than Instagram’s latest iconography to see this trend in motion. Color is back in a big way, with gradients making a triumphant return to the front and center, piggybacking on the bold typefaces mentioned above. Bolder designs that use single colors effectively are equally possible this year, as we see many brands adopting a simplistic, minimal art direction.

4. More unique layouts

Over the past few years, many in the web design industry have questioned whether the design world was dead or not. Plenty of designers claim that theming and simplification of design structure and content management software has made the industry more hollow, discouraging creativity and unique designs at a fundamental level. We are already seeing the antithesis of this, though, through websites such as The Outline and Epicurrence, and our guess is that 2017 will see this trend continued in a big way.

5. More conversational emphasis

Many have called 2016 “The Year of the Bots”, and they aren’t entirely wrong. Just look at all of the bot-based startups we’ve seen this past year; there’s too many to name! Using the human language as a design tool seems like it’s about to be big business, especially as brands become more personal and niched. Expect to see this shake the web design industry to its roots.

If 2016 was any indication, we are in for an exciting year for web design Singapore in 2017. By learning from the past, we can look to the future to create bolder, more effective and more personalised web presences for brands than ever before.
